Mad Girl
by Bryony Gordon
Mad girl is
an honest, autobiographical account of author Bryony Gordon's experiences of
OCD, Depression, Bulimia, and drug dependency. If I'm honest I imagined this
book would be a bit of a depressing and downbeat read, well I couldn't have
been more wrong!
Wittily
written and intelligent I really admire Bryony for her bravery for writing so
open heartedly about such a sensitive
and personal subject. The book is damn right hilarious in places and makes you
re-think your impression of mental health and its sufferers.
Although
this book is no way written to be a self help book. Bryony does share her
coping mechanisms and her experiences of seeking help and going through therapy
with lashings of humour. In particular I loved how she renamed her OCD ‘Jareth
the Goblin King’ it really made me laugh.
This is a
great book that I would highly recommend to anyone that has/is struggling with
mental health issues or in fact to anyone who feels they would like to
understand more. This book for me was a lightbulb moment that far from being
weird, suffering with mental illness is more common place and normal than you
think.
